The Wise Man
60
The wise man
He sat back,
crinkly-eyed behind his golden rims.
Was this man about to impart wisdom on me?
Surely not.
“When I was your age”
- and my eyes rolled back
“Things were different”
- sure they were.
I considered the moment like Hollywood,
How surreal.
Behind him, the sun set beyond the balcony,
and at this angle, it was magnified through his glasses.
I was sure a director should stop him.
With a cut!
A retake!
“It was 1946, the war was done,
What would we do in a world allied-won?
Where to now, I asked a friend,
There is no money beyond the bend.”
Was that it?
Was that his advice?
TheHollywood reviews wouldn’t be nice.
“And?” I asked with fingers crossed,
An epiphany before it’s lost?
“And what?”
“Well, what did you do?”
He leaned forward –
“I found a job you lazy twit.” - and laughed.

Hi Moira.
This is good. He was a crafty old man as well.
I remember my wifes old grandad on my first visit to him and he asked what i did for a living. I told him that i'd just done 20 years of working away from home and was having a couple of years break. He turned to me an said "No work, no money, no money, no food.
I asked my wife and what is with my 20 years working away from home!! Got no answer.

Upppers. I don't often understand poetry, but your piece was understandable without being a piece I'd find in a first grade primer. I thoroughly enjoyed "The Wiseman"
Haha, nice ending to your poem--wise man indeed. Love the light playfulness of this poem.
I loved the humor that brought the poem to a close. Great poem!
Great! haha! =)
I loved this. It reminded me of my father. The photos were perfect, too. Voted up!

Nice header 'The Wiseman', attractive for good readers to check out the article. One of the quotes goes through mind, 'A wise person does at once, what a fool does at last. Both do the same thing; only at different times'.- Baltasar Gracian
