The Water is Wide

Twenty-three years on land did not prepare me

for the quick riot of colors

which sink steadily into a blue world

whose infinite appetite devours light.

To go inside, to enter deeply,

is what brought us here, where our hair

floats above us like a wild crown

that points towards heaven.

Deep down, diver's care!

Even what we fear is beautiful

and part of what we came for—encounter

with shark or elusive jellyfish.

And the unequalled quiet that intoxicates.

The freedom

from time’s ticking watch,

the elegant way that everything bends

in the blue-black veil it wears.

We run our hands over an edge of a cave,

praying, sacred, sacred, and sacred.

As we make our careful ascent back

to the surface, we feel less in danger of

our eardrums exploding

and more of the pleasant feeling

welling up in our hearts.

Thank you alocsin. Palawan is heaven for divers - Coron, El Nido, Amanpulo and of course, Tubbataha.

A fellow Piscean! That would explain our common love and affinity for the aquatic realm Dee42. Being by the beach and in the water simply rejuvenates me, I get recharged whenever I find myself by the sea. If not, a long soak in a warm bath does just as well. Thanks for your comments.

Marvelous. ...I've harbored this secret fantasy of diving for years, and this is exactly how I envisioned it.

mvaivata, diving is a truly magical and wonderful experience. You are brought to another world and it is quite peaceful and tranquil down there. You should try it one of these days. Thank you for your comment.

Beautiful, made me miss blowing bubbles under the waves!

Thanks for SHARING.

Thanks for your comment and the SHARE Brett.Tesol. It might be too cold to comfortably blow bubbles under the waves in Korea but the Philippines is just nearby if you one day plan to reconnect once again with the sea and the wonders beneath it. Many Koreans visit the Philippines to go diving for the weekend.
